Dunbar has its very own well-established Surf School over at Belhaven Beach.

Coast to Coast also have surf equipment for hire for all levels. You can hire at Belhaven beach at lesson times (no roof rack required!) or from the Dunbar office during working hours (and a free soft roof rack for bigger boards or smaller cars!) Costs of hire are very reasonable between £10 and £15.

If you want to learn the basics or build your skills, there are a wide range of surf lessons available for adults, children and groups. Prices vary from £30 for beginner classes for the young ones to £55 for longer advanced sessions.

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

The weather is changeable in Scotland. The East of Scotland is drier than the West and sunnier too. In winter it can be much colder. Dunbar is one of the sunniest locations in Scotland, and while has been given the soubriquet Sunny Dunny, come prepared for changeable weather. It is colder than London, but we expect you will be out and about enjoying the great outdoors, and if you are obsessed with the weather the dramatic skies are guaranteed to keep cloud watchers and photographers busy!

The UK Meteorological Office provides an excellent summary of the climate and maps of climate variables averaged since 1971. The monthly assessments are quite useful too, but we expect most of you will be interested in the short range forecasts, which – as you would expect – are more reliable than the long range forecasts.

Templelands is noticeable where the High Street widens

Here is a late 19th Century view in the days before the car and electricity from a postcard of the period. The view looks south to the now deconsecrated church, which is about to be restored as a private home after a period of dereliction. Gas clearly had arrived, used for street lighting which testifies to the former affluence of the town.

The Lion and the Unicorn on the tall Victorian tenement building are only just visible and beyond that the tenements at Templelands are set back but noticeable where the High Street starts to widen.

John Muir’s birthplace, which was derelict, has recently transformed the home into an interpretative centre to highlight his work and achievements and worth a visit – it is free.

The John Muir Birthplace Trust, formed in September 1998, aims to secure the future of John Muir’s birthplace in Dunbar and to develop the interpretative centre and popularise Muir’s work.

Muir was born in 1838, some years after the houses at Templelands were built.  He emigrated with his parents to the United States, which is where he settled and campaigned for the preservation of natural environments.
