WE ARE TAKING A BREAK
We have been letting “The Garden Flat @Templands” as a self contained self catering holiday accommodation unit since 2009.
As we’ve not had any holidays ourselves, we are taking a break.
It is a snug space with a cosy cottage feel, but well-equipped and very centrally located. Currently laid out as a 2-bedroomed flat, it ideal for hosting 2 adults. It is only a few minutes walk to the beach or the harbour and has access to the formal but private walled garden, for quiet relaxation.
The Garden Flat @Templelands is non-smoking and pet-free.
The Garden Flat @Templelands is managed by Ruth & Philip – it is not an investment property, we do not run a chain of airbnbs, it is a space that is ancillary to our main home
If you are looking to Rent Self Catering Holiday Accommodation in East Lothian, then a stay in the Historic Burgh of Dunbar is worth thinking about. Book direct with us to make a small saving on the rates advertised on Airbnb, Home Away and Tripadvisor.
By staying in Dunbar you avoid the tourist crush, but can easily explore the historic and natural heritage of East Lothian and still get into the centre of Edinburgh in 20 minutes. Dunbar is crammed with historic buildings and history, with the picturesque villages of East Linton, Stenton, and Oldhamstocks nearby. The historic towns of Haddington, North Berwick or Berwick upon Tweed are not much further. Or just potter in the town, cycle on quiet country lanes, learn to surf, or just go fishing in the harbour, go beach combing on the rocky shoreline, packed with natural interest and internationally important for wildlife.
Day trips to a great many destinations don’t necessarily require a car and there is plenty to do: surf, paddleboard, cycle, or nature watching along with more conventional museum / heritage experiences like old gardens, estates and castles. If you have your own transport the Scottish Borders, Loch Lomond National Park, Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, St Andrews and Dundee are within easy driving distance.
There are a number of quiet cycle routes (many of the rural roads are low traffic) and paths which range from the very easy to more challenging, and the coverage and signposting is improving. The John Muir Way is open as of 2014 and the Southern Upland way is a few miles south.
On arrival we recommend a stroll down to the old harbour – a relaxing 10 minute walk. There you will find our very own Kittiwake colony, an imaginative restoration of the Battery, courtesy of the Harbour Trust and Dunbar Castle, with its rich and colourful past.
If you enjoy old houses and gardens stay in our Self Catering Holiday Let
We’ve hosted hundreds of visitors in the Garden Flat @ Templelands over the last 10 years from every walk of life and most corners of the globe and at all times of the year. The flat is part of a terrace known as Templelands, comprising 2 symmetrical period properties that date to late eighteenth century. We are number 2 Templelands.
Our Dunbar Holiday Rental is central, with easy access to shops and public transport. The holiday flat is minutes from the station, but still pretty close to the sea (only a few minutes walk), with a small quiet formal garden for relaxation / quiet enjoyment. The flat is a great base for excursions or to start or end a longer journey during your visit to Scotland.

The Garden Holiday Flat in Dunbar is part of a pair of grade B listed late Georgian Town Houses, known as Templelands. The flat has changed uses many times in the last 200 years, yet retains a lot of the charm and character – that is, it has not been unsympathetically modernised and there’s plenty of original features, including traditional shutters and wonky walls. The finishes used are mostly traditional and sympathetic to the environment and as far as practical our latest interventions have been respectful to the style and the form of the building.
